First, Marina is right — I’m a woman. I’d say “girl,” but as I’m turning 33 in December it feels weird to call myself that. :)
And regarding agnostics, I think the ones you guys have run across are more atheist. Agnosticism is merely the belief that divinity is unknowable to mankind. We simply do not have the ability to fully grasp something of that scope and magnitude. We’re like blind men fumbling about an elephant, each one of us claiming to know what it is based on what part of its body we’re touching at the time. And yes, I stole that example.
I don’t think any of the religions have it totally right, and far too many of them are abused by people who use it to gain power and authority. I don’t demand that anyone “prove” that God exists as they see Him, because such a task would be impossible. And all they could show me is God the way that they happen to perceive Him. But that also doesn’t mean that there is no such thing as the divine.
I also won’t subscribe to any one organized religion over the other because as far as I’m concerned they are all corrupted by the earthly desires of the men (and sometimes women) who run them. They are more about controlling people and maintaining power than about understanding any sort of divinity.
Here is a link to the Snopes.com article about the letter supposedly written to Dr. Laura where the writer discusses the hypocrisy of Christians who don’t follow all of the laws in the Bible: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.asp

Dear Marina, at some point, possibly summer next year, I’ll be travelling to America to meet and stay with someone I have only as yet talked to online.
What do you think is the most reasonable set of behaviors for meeting someone in person for the first time?
